911 Mistake: Crews Take Hour To Get To Woman’s House
911 Worker Has Been Fired, Officials Say
ATLANTA — CBS 46 News has learned it took crews an hour to get to a woman’s apartment after a mistake by a 911 operator. That new information came Wednesday from Johns Creek officials. Fulton County officials said the 911 operator sent emergency responders to the wrong address. Fulton County’s 911 director, Alfred Moore, said it began Saturday afternoon when Darlene Dukes called 911 for help because she was “in respiratory distress. “Moore said the 911 operator misheard the address Dukes gave and sent crews to Wells Street in Atlanta when Dukes was actually at home on Wales Street in Johns Creek, north of Atlanta. When the operator realized she made a mistake, fire crews from a station in Johns Creek were dispatched. The station is only five minutes from Dukes’ home. “Something went wrong, and I would like to find out what happened,” said her mother, Ida Dukes. Moore said the operator should have noticed that the call was coming from a cell tower in north Fulton County, not Atlanta. The 911 operator has been fired. Dukes’ family said Tuesday they are still in shock over her death. “Darlene was a beautiful girl in the prime of her life,” said brother Derrick Dukes. “My child would be alive today if they had responded timely,” Ida Dukes said. Fulton County officials said Wednesday that they will get the 911 tapes from the incident and will hold a thorough review of the case.
Our day away…
Catherine and I decided we needed to get away. We would love to go to be able to go to the beach for about a week (or more) but with our crazy schedules, that’s just not possible right now. Maybe sometime before the summer is up and Catherine is back in school.
My parents were up in the mountains near Blairsville, GA for the Memorial Day weekend and were nice enough to invite us up. Unfortunately, we were only able to go for the day — otherwise we would have stayed at least one night. We left at about 9:30 a.m. and got there shortly before 12 noon. Driving up was a lot of fun (despite the trouble we had getting breakfast), gave us a good chance to chat (we never stop talking once we get in the car on the way somewhere). It was a nice drive up, real pretty scenery.
Anyway, once we got there — we ended up hanging out at the cabin my parents rented for an hour or so before going to Vogel State Park nearby to grill out for lunch. We had hamburgers, chips, and some delicious brownies my mom cooked. My mom and I went on a walk around part of the lake with her two dogs and Catherine and I went out on a paddle boat. Then we went back to the cabin, I played foosball with my sister Jennifer and Katie sat on the porch with my mom and ate her boiled peanuts. Before we left, we had some strawberry ice cream which was the best treat before the drive back.
We started chatting up as always on the way back but it wasn’t as steady. We were tired and realized it was back to the real world for us both (work for me, work and running calls for Catherine). Being in the mountains always takes your mind off everything that’s going on — it really gives you a breath of fresh air. It was nice just to get away for a day.

About Me
I’m 22 years old. I have lived in Oconee for 9 years, before that I lived in South Georgia (Moultrie-Colquitt County). I would eventually like to get a career in Computer Forensics with the FBI or the GBI. I got a new truck back in 2005, a Dodge Ram 1500. My wonderful fiance and I have two babies together, our little boy is D’Artagnan, and our baby girl, Cali! They are both Great Pyrenees and are expected to finish out around 200 lbs when full grown. We got the name D’Artagnan (from the 3 Musketeers), and so far he’s been great and is very easy to train. We are enjoying him and have more and more fun with him everyday. Cali is the baby in the family, and acts every inch the spoiled pup! Both are snow white (when they haven’t been in the mud). I started working with the Athens-Clarke Police Department as a Communications Officer in August of 2005 and I love it so far. It’s a fun job…something different everyday- but saving lives is a guarantee.
